Living in Australia I grew up with a big focus on sun protection from a young age. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. When starting a modest swimwear brand one of my most crucial non negotiables for me was that the product must have UPF rating. This has been a challenge for finding suppliers, material, designing prints and increased costs of manufacturing but one worth the effort we believe.

Sun protection is one of our core values of Modest Mermaid. Our swim dresses are UPF50+ this is the maximum UPF rating achievable and it means you are protected from 98% of the sun's harmful UV rays. Our swim dress fabric will reduce your skin's UV exposure by 50 times in areas where the skin is protected by our fabric. We also designed the swim legging for further protection of the legs so really your protected neck to foot.

Other than wearing UPF50+ full covered swimwear there are some key things you should do when outside in the sun:

  • Always ensure you have sunscreen protection on all parts of the body and face not covered, ensure you use at least UPF30+ but even better if you can use UPF50+
  • Always wearing a hat
  • Seek shade as much as possible
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes

Even on cloudy and cool days UV radiation can be high. This means you can't rely on clear skies or high temperatures to determine when you need to protect yourself from the sun.

As we say in Australia: slip, slop, slap

Have fun!

Love MM xx
